What do human beings today most desire? This question is even more complicated if we consider it in the context of mobile apps development: what are the main demands, expectations and needs that can be more or less accomplished with the help of mobile apps?

This is how Trenwatching.com team of analysts answered this question in one of their latest reports. “At heart, human beings have a set of unchanging, fundamental needs and wants. Consumers will lavish love and attention on products, services and experiences that unlock new ways to serve these imperatives”.

Mostly we would agree with this statement, remembering only too well Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs. However, we must admit there is something missing in that hierarchy if we apply it nowadays. Today human beings (let’s talk about those who have smartphones) struggle to be even healthier, smarter and faster. All is for the one purpose – to be MORE PRODUCTIVE.

“More productive” means to be superb in playing different roles in our lives: being a responsible mother (or father), beautiful wife (or husband), reliable friend, successful worker or entrepreneur. There is a lot to do and extremely little time for all the things in our lives. That is why the hottest frontiers for mobile apps development today are still self-improvement and professional productivity.

To support our statements here is an analysis conducted by Flurry between the months of January and March 2014 showing that the average US consumer spends 119% more time in productivity apps than they did over the same period a year ago. This includes time spent in apps on iOS and Android devices, both tablets and phones.

There are roughly two main subcategories in the productivity apps: 1) health & mindfulness and 2) personal & professional productivity.

HEALTH & MINDFULNESS

Mobile applications that encourage self-tracking through daily life and supercharge self-improvement through fitness and physical wellbeing are still needed. Stressed, time-poor, over-stimulated consumers are also expecting the solutions to attend to their mental wellbeing. Let’s look at a few nice examples of apps aimed to accomplish these tasks (and we must admit they do it well!).

Though this may not be so obvious, it is still possible to find unfilled gaps in the category of self-improvement and productivity. At least it is always possible to improve solutions that already exist. Mobile apps should become the best personal assistants, life coaches and teachers for consumers. Certainly, consumers will gladly spend their money and attention on apps that manage to discover new ways to be more productive.
