If you had launched your iPhone or iPad apps before Apple announced the new iOS 7 in June, most likely now you are wondering whether or not you should spend another $10.000+ to upgrade your apps just to give them the new fancy look.
In the new iOS buttons no longer have borders, drop-down displays are translucent, icons are different. Apart from that standard interface elements will look differently in iOS 7, but customized elements will stay the same. This may result in significant design inconsistencies and your users will get upset.
Depending on your product roadmap it could be implemented, not in a first place but sooner or later you will need to update your apps to iOS 7 style. Otherwise, in 3-6 month your app will looks and feels out-of-date.
Here is a list of things to consider implementing in your apps when you update it for the latest of version of Apple’s mobile operating system.
Flat design means removing shadows, physical objects and unnecessary textures in design (like a bookshelf for Apple’s Newsstand). The color scheme is a bit different, with black and white modes, hints of red, blue and pastel. Focus on clarity encourage to simplify designs and reduce visual clutter to create a cleaner, better user experience.
Solid-color buttons are now replaced by buttons that don’t have borders. Menus, controls, navigation and status bars are now different too.
Include the status bar in the content area
Status bar needs to be considered as part of the content. If you add a tint color to the navigation bar, it includes the status bar and creates a larger space of color than before. If you use the built-in transparency, your content will blur behind the status bar when the user scrolls.
Consider the physics and dynamic
The new iOS7 provides a physics engine to let you parallax items on the screen and create the feeling of depth. Once optimized for iOS 7 your app will be able to make various user interface objects appear to move in 3D as you move the device around.
The UI elements in iOS 7 react to gravity and applied forces, collide and bounce. This dynamic behavior of interface elements is not limited to entertainment applications like games, but is a new design concept for the entire OS.
Translucence and blur effects
Feel free to experiment with translucent and blur effects to give you app additional depth. These effects allow you to hint at content behind the layer and give the user additional context.
And one more thing.
Each generation of the iOS provides new technologies that allow developers to write more effective code, implementing functionality that may have been difficult to deliver with previous versions of the iOS. Taking in account the iOS 7 adoption rate you could consider switching to iOS 7-only support just in a few months.
